Set up Google Maps API Key#

The first step is to create a key to use the Google Maps API. This can be done by following the instructions in the official documentation.

Your First Map#

1. Create an HTML file index.html#

<html>
  <head>
    <title>Simple Markers</title>
    <script src="https://polyfill.io/v3/polyfill.min.js?features=default"></script>

    <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="./style.css" />
    <script type="module" src="./index.js"></script>
  </head>
  <body>
    <div id="map"></div>

    <!--
      The `defer` attribute causes the callback to execute after the full HTML
      document has been parsed. For non-blocking uses, avoiding race conditions,
      and consistent behavior across browsers, consider loading using Promises.
      See https://developers.google.com/maps/documentation/javascript/load-maps-js-api
      for more information.
      -->
    <script
      src="https://maps.googleapis.com/maps/api/js?key=AIzaSyB41DRUbKWJHPxaFjMAwdrzWzbVKartNGg&callback=initMap&v=weekly"
      defer
    ></script>
  </body>
</html>

2. Create a CSS file style.css#

/*
 * Always set the map height explicitly to define the size of the div element
 * that contains the map.
 */
#map {
  height: 100%;
}

/*
 * Optional: Makes the sample page fill the window.
 */
html,
body {
  height: 100%;
  margin: 0;
  padding: 0;
}

3. Create a JavaScript file index.js#

function initMap() {
  const myLatLng = { lat: -25.363, lng: 131.044 };
  const map = new google.maps.Map(document.getElementById("map"), {
    zoom: 4,
    center: myLatLng,
  });

  new google.maps.Marker({
    position: myLatLng,
    map,
    title: "Hello World!",
  });
}

window.initMap = initMap;
